FAQs
CBD is an abbreviation for cannabidiol, a phyto-cannabinoid compound within the category of cannabinoids, active components of cannabis. Unlike THC (the cannabinoid compound that produces a “high” in the user), hemp-derived CBD is notable for its lack of psychoactive properties. What CBD does possess, however, is the reported ability to positively affect certain functions in the human body. These reported effects allow CBD’s potential health benefits to be accessed by more people in a wider variety of circumstances.
According to the Federal Farm Act of 2014, and as expanded upon with the Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018 (i.e., the “2018 Farm Bill”), hemp plants containing less than 0.3% THC are considered legal for cultivation and production. Wellphora CBD hemp oil is extracted from plants that meet those guidelines and, subject to state mandated limitations, is federally legal in all 50 US states.
No. When hemp-derived CBD is extracted from the hemp plant, the psychoactive component in hemp, THC, is present in such low, federally mandated trace amounts that it causes no “high” effect.
The THC concentration of all Wellphora products remains below the legal limit set forth by Federal regulations. This low level of THC is typically too low to be measurable during drug testing, but is still present and comes with a theoretical risk of a positive test. Legally, any positive THC test result with a hemp-derived CBD product at or below 0.3% THC would constitute a false positive. However, an employer, at their sole discretion has the right to enact a zero tolerance drug testing policy where even a false positive THC drug test could cause an issue.
The human body has an endocannabinoid system (ECS) that is involved in regulating a variety of physiological and cognitive processes. To put it simply, the body naturally produces neurotransmitters called endocannabinoids, which interact with a system of cannabinoid receptors located in the brain and throughout the body. This is vital to maintaining homeostasis, or balance within tissues and functions such as metabolism and the circulatory, digestive, immune, endocrine, nervous and reproductive systems. There is evidence suggesting that ingested cannabinoids (phyto-cannabinoids) can help maintain and boost the beneficial functioning of these systems
Our Canneuro hemp oil uses an extremely high-grade organic, fractionated coconut oil as a carrier. “Fractionated” refers to the process of separating out certain parts of regular coconut oil, to produce a healthy oil that acts as an excellent source of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) and stays liquid at lower temperatures. MCTs can play a role in helping burn more fat and calories and reportedly may aid in weight loss. Our 93% pure organic MCT oil is more expensive than other ingredients commonly used as a carrier for other hemp-derived CBD oils.
Hemp-derived, full-spectrum CBD contains other related cannabinoids, as opposed to “CBD isolate,” which has had those additional components distilled out. Full-spectrum CBD is considered to be more effective than other types of CBD. This is believed to be due to the “entourage effect,” or the combined effect of multiple cannabinoids working together, naturally, within the body in ways that are still not fully understood or explained by science.
Hemp-derived CBD has been connected with certain possible undesired side effects, including dry mouth, nausea, “wake” feeling, drowsiness, dizziness, diarrhea, changes in appetite, nervousness, and depression, but is generally considered well-tolerated by most humans with a very small group experiencing these less-desireable effects.
There are people that hemp oil may not be right for:
- Pregnant women or lactating mothers
- Children
- Individuals with hepatic or liver diseases
- People who are allergic or sensitive to MCT oil
- Individuals who have blood pressure problems
- Those with an allergy to hemp
Our Canneuro 1000 is 1000mg of full-spectrum, hemp-derived CBD in a bottle that contains 30 mL of total product. Each bottle in the Canneuro line-up is designed to provide 60 doses via a 1mL dropper. Each dose is a half dropper and each half dropper is 1/2 mL. The Canneuro 1000 would contain approximately 17mg of CBD per dose, which is recommended 2-3x daily.
We offer two methods of CBD delivery that have been reported to provide significant relief for occasional pain. The first is our Canneuro CBD Oil which is always front-line as far as what seems to provide the best relief. This product is delivered sublingually (absorbed under the tongue). We recommend either Canneuro1000 or CanneuroMax 2500; body mass, severity of symptoms and metabolism all play significant factors in an individual determining what amount of hemp-derived CBD oil they interpret as being the most beneficial. The CanneuroMax 2500 is significantly more potent, and you may need to start with ½ of the recommended dose initially and slowly work up to the recommended dose listed on the packaging. Every person requires a little different dosing to reach their desired effects, and there will be some trial and error needed to find the best dosing regimen for you.
The second delivery method is a topical application. Our 4.5 oz. Pain Cream 555 is a supplement to the oil and can provide relatively immediate relief based on user feedback.
The Canneuro sublingual oil is absorbed into the bloodstream through the tissues under the tongue and works systemically, often taking care of the underlying issues causing occasional pain. The pain cream works directly at the site, consistent with the action of any topical cream.
“Hemp Oil” is often used synonymously with “CBD Oil” in the hemp industry. Hemp seed oil, which contains no CBD, is also sometimes referred to by the name Hemp Oil, and can cause questions to be raised on how a product is being marketed and the CBD content of a product.
This confusion can be a way to mislead the uneducated consumer. In fact, products labeled as hemp oil may not contain any CBD at all. It’s important to look for products with clear labels showing the overall quantity of CBD—and the mg per dose—as well as other ingredients. In a study of CBD products from 2017, almost 70% of the analyzed samples were mislabeled.
Prior to the 2018 Farm Bill being signed by President Trump in December 2018, CBD was treated as a Schedule I controlled substance, and considered federally illegal. It was, however, already legal in 46 states at that time. Because of the federal limitations on CBD, large retailers such as Amazon, EBay, etc. did not allow CBD products to be sold on their platforms. In order for a product to be considered “federally legal,” it was labeled as “Hemp Oil,” while CBD was called “Hemp Extract”. This allowed manufacturers to ship and distribute to states where CBD was legal, prior to December 2018.
The optimum serving of CBD is completely dependent on the person. There are several factors that play a key role on how long you may feel the effects from a single serving. As a general guideline we recommend 2-3x daily—but metabolism, body mass, activity level, and severity of symptoms all play a factor and these can change daily.
For example, one of our team notices relief during the height of allergy season by using an additional serving around 2-3 PM, in addition to taking it morning and night. An extra serving after an extended workout can also be effective.
Adult servings can range anywhere from 30mg-300mg as a daily amount. The total number of milligrams/day is often broken up as more than one serving, to be split up throughout the day. We recommend that each person needs to find their own “sweet spot” when it comes to servings, for his or her own particular needs.
About CBD dosing
CBD is dose-dependent. Adult dosing normally starts at 20-30mg for day of full-spectrum CBD.
There are many factors that should be taken into consideration with CBD dosing:
Body Mass
• Up to 125 lbs. should consider a 20mg-per-day starting daily dose, larger people would want to use roughly a proportional increased amount
Metabolism
• Age (faster metabolism in 25 year old vs. a 75 year old).
• Activity level and general health.
• Younger or more active people may want to increase frequency of use, perhaps adding a mid-day dose to a morning and night dose schedule.
Symptoms
• Neurological symptoms require less mg per day of CBD to be effective (sleep, anxiety, depression, PTSD, dementia)
• Pain and inflammation require the highest dosing (30-300mg daily)
— RA (rheumatoid arthritis), and fibromyalgia patients may not experience significant relief until reaching 70-90mg/daily
True or false—the more mg of CBD you take, the better the relief?
• True: pain and inflammation or quantifiable symptoms may experience more relief as dosage increases (once you find some relief at a certain level, keep increasing until you find maximum effectiveness (“sweet spot”)
• And false: some people experience an energy boost/euphoria at various doses
Full spectrum vs. isolate CBD
• Full-Spectrum (proper manufacturing and lab testing necessary to ensure no failed THC drug tests)
— Greater efficacy than isolate-based products
— Longer lasting effects (up to 12 hours) and fat solubility
• Isolate (pure CBD)
— Contains ZERO THC, but only hits one cannabinoid receptor (no “entourage effect”)
— Has potential to work well initially, but with a significant drop-off between weeks 2-4.
— Shorter acting and water soluble—flushes out of the body faster
Efficacy of CBD on the body (by route of entry)
• 100% efficacy: Injected into vein (fastest acting, but dangerous)
• +-80 efficacy: Smoking (unknown long term health effects, potentially bad)
• +-60% efficacy: Sublingual absorption (oil under the tongue is the #1 recommended administration route for CBD)
— 20 minutes to theoretically have the ability to affect every cell in the human body
• 10-20% efficacy: Oral consumption (eating)
— Longer lasting effects, but poor efficacy—digested and broken down by stomach enzymes, then hepatic system (liver) scrubs before entering bloodstream
In general, because the CBD supplement industry is still relatively new, there is a variety of opinions on exactly the right dose for individuals based on age, weight, condition, etc. Fortunately, CBD has been widely shown to be well-tolerated by most people. Wellphora offers a range of potencies to make it easier for you to get just the right amount for your particular needs.
What is the endocannabinoid system?
Cannabinoids, extracted from the cannabis plant (hemp, in the case of legal CBD), are chemicals that trigger the natural cannabinoid receptors in the brain and body. Located all over the body, they are known as CB1 and CB2 receptors, and are part of the body’s endocannabinoid system. This system is extremely critical to our body’s ability to maintain homeostasis (the equilibrium of conditions for optimal functioning of various systems in the body).
CB1 receptors are primarily found in the brain and central nervous system, and to a lesser extent in other tissues. CB1 receptors affect:
- Motor activity
- Thinking
- Motor coordination
- Appetite
- Short-term memory
- Pain perception
- Immune cells
CB2 receptors are located mostly in the peripheral organs, especially those associated with the immune system. CB2 receptors affect:
- Gut
- Kidneys
- Pancreas
- Adipose tissue
- Skeletal muscle
- Bone
- Eyes
- Tumors
- Reproductive system
- Immune system
- Respiratory tract
- Skin
- Cardiovascular system
- Liver
What about CBD for pets?
Like humans, all mammals have an endocannabinoid system, which works in the same way to balance natural functions in the body. This means that our pet friends can benefit from the same wellness effects afforded by CBD that we people do.
